To avoid, or stop a “waymo” ( Or any automated/driverless car) carry a corner-cube reflector in metal. The car’s radar will “see” this & STOP ( We hope )
I must admit I am not optimistic about this development .. it seems to be a fake solution in search of a problem
Greg T,
It will be an ongoing game of cat and mouse as people find inappropriate ways to disable the vehicles and the software gets updated to recognise that this is not a real problem.
An open-topped van carrying temporary traffic lights not in use used to confuse Teslas and force them to stop but now this is recognised and not a problem.
I look forward to driverless taxis. There is a lot of evidence to show they are already safer overall than letting humans carry out the task and automated vehicles present a lot of opportunities as well as problems. Once upon a time, no doubt, many people weren’t in favour of having almost anybody driving rather than leave it to chauffeurs.

PoP. I have much less far faith than you in this technology. My car has (the now mandatory) ADAS systems and they are dreadful. I disable them every time I start the car. They see hazards that simply don’t exist and the speed limit recognition software is woefully poor – would I be excused the speeding fine because my cameras failed to spot the sign???
This software has been designed for American roads where jaywalking is an offence – I worry that the software designers simply don’t understand pedestrian behaviour / pedestrian priorities that we have in European cities.

Also, see an SF novel by C Stross, where a not Uber/Wymo self-driver is “kidnapped” by the bad guys, trapping the passengers ( called – “Rule 34”, I think )
